not exactly an attack after all

So after fooling around for most of the day, I thought the broadband slowdown might be something from inside the house, since shutting down the mail server didn’t seem to do anything. I finally talked to Alexx, who shut down the two copies of Bit Torrent he was running. The results were immediate - the router became immediately quiet.

He’s put one copy back up, and we’re going to see how that impacts broadband performance.

Now I did learn a bunch of interesting things in my search - specifically that we get failed attacks on our system several times a month. But that doesn’t seem to be what the problem was - this time.

You can throttle the bandwidth used by BitTorrent, which may help, too. If I don't, it'll pretty much clog my upload path, making the net very sluggish. On a Mac, you can do this with CarraFix or ipfw.

Thanks, I'll pass it on to Alexx. Interestingly, our network is a mixed marraige of PCs and Macs, and Alexx is on the PC side of the universe; but I suspect there's something for him to use there too.

Some of the BitTorrent clients have rate limiting built in, though the official client doesn't. I imagine there's something that will work on the PC, but I haven't kept up on that side of things, lately.

As of now, there official client actually *does*. I was using an older model, but downloaded the new one today. The rate limiter is a real obvious slider at the top of the GUI.

Oh, the Mac client doesn't. I'm running the latest official one (4.1.1 beta) here, and there's no rate limiting in the client. It's easy enough to do rate limiting at the system level, here, though.
